A vicariate is a geographic grouping of parishes within a diocese, created to provide pastoral care, collaboration, and administrative support. Each vicariate helps the Archbishop serve the faithful more effectively by organizing parishes into regions led by appointed clergy.

A deanery is a smaller grouping of neighboring parishes within a vicariate. It exists to encourage collaboration, communication, and shared pastoral efforts among parishes in a local area.

Each deanery is led by a dean (also called a vicar forane), a priest appointed by the Archbishop to support pastors, foster unity among parishes, and serve as a link between the parishes and the wider diocese. Deaneries often work together on formation, liturgy, clergy support, and regional initiatives.

The Western Vicariate is one of three vicariates in the Archdiocese of St. Louis and serves parishes across St. Charles, Lincoln, Franklin, Warren, and parts of St. Louis Counties. It includes 50 parishes, organized into two deaneries: Deanery 5, serving the southern portion of the region with 28 parishes, and Deanery 6, serving the northern portion with 22 parishes, including the parishes of St. Charles County (excluding Augusta), Lincoln County, and northern Warren County.

The Western Vicariate is led by Episcopal Vicar Very Reverend John Brockland, JCL, JV, VE, with Very Reverend Monsignor Patrick Hambrough, VF serving as Dean of Deanery 5 and Very Reverend Nicholas Kastenholz, JCL, VF serving as Dean of Deanery 6. Laura Voegelie serves as the Western Vicariate Coordinator.
